How I Met Harry Wong
It was only through a teacher mailing
list on the Internet that I heard glowing reports about Harry Wong's book The
First Day's of School. I had never heard of it before. And, I'm
sorry to say, but I thought I knew a lot of the educational speakers but, I had
never heard of Harry Wong before either!
I ordered the book and studied every
page, every word of it during the summer. I had mentioned the book to my
former principal who told me that the
superintendent had ordered his videotapes. The last week of the summer, I
spent every day watching the videos, studying them and taking copious
notes. (The videos were so popular this summer, that
I was allowed to take only two of them out a day, return them to the board
office and get two more.) I spent a lot of hours with Harry, before
meeting him!
I followed his advice--yes, even
dusting and framing all my degrees--and that first day, that first week was one
of the most pleasant and memorable teaching
experiences I've ever had.
The weekend before I met Harry, my
wife and I had dinner with a good couple of ours--an elementary school French
teacher and her husband, a brand new high school vice principal. He just
happened to mention that there was an in service with a Harry Wong on Thursday,
September 23, 1999. (Our district now is so big, we just don't hear about
these speakers and in services.) I called his publishing company and set
up an interview with him just before his presentation at a local high school.
And that's how I came to meet Harry and Rosemary Wong, authors of The First
Day's of School --and I'm glad I did!
MANAGING WITH
CLASS: AN INTERVIEW WITH HARRY K. WONG
Former high school science teacher in
Menlo Park, California U.S.A.
for 17 years, Harry K. Wong is a best selling author and speaker. I
interviewed Harry just before his morning presentation to a group of new
teachers.
Busy Educator: What do you feel is
the number one challenge confronting teachers today?
Harry Wong: Managing the classroom
correctly.
Busy Educator: What's one piece
of advice you can give teachers to have a great teaching career?
Harry Wong: Managing that
class. If you don't have good classroom management, you'll never be able
to do what you want to do.
Busy Educator: Why did you
decide to write The First Day's of School?
Harry Wong: I
presented to teachers who thought that the presentation was going to be
"another boring inservice." They asked me for material. I had nothing to hand
out.
Busy Educator: There are many
books on classroom management. Why has your book done so well?
Harry Wong: The book isn't
written by a college professor. It's not like a college textbook.
It's teacher to teacher, well designed, easy to understand and believable.
Busy Educator: You mention that
America
became strong with its cultural values i.e. hard work, effort and
integrity. How does America
and Canada
get those values back?
Harry Wong: The parents aren't
doing it. Kids are developing and creating their own culture.
They're not going to church. It's up to the teacher and the schools.
